How to Make Restaurant-Style White Sauce Pizza at Home

Wash hands in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Do this before and after touching food. Wash your hands with soap and warm water, and don’t forget the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

Food Hygiene & Safety At Home?

Thoroughly dry your hands immediately after you wash them. Always dry your hands with a clean towel, disposable paper towel or under an air dryer. The important thing is to make sure your hands are completely dry. Never use a tea towel or your clothes to dry your hands.

  • Wash your hands after: going to the toilet; handling raw food; blowing your nose; handling garbage; touching your ears, nose, mouth or other parts of the body; smoking; handling animals.
  • Wash your kitchen equipment and countertops with hot soapy water. Do this after working with each food item.
  • Rinse fruits and veggies.
  • Clean the lids on canned goods before opening

The first step to making this amazing pizza is to create the dough.

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, and salt. Add water and stir until you have a smooth dough. Transfer the dough to another lightly floured bowl and let it rise for about an hour in a warm place until it has double in size. Now you’re ready to start adding your toppings!
After the dough has finished rising, roll it out on a floured board. Place the rolled dough onto a greased pizza pan and spread with your favorite sauce (we recommend white sauce!). Top the pizza with shredded cheese, vegetables of your choice (mushrooms, peppers and onions work great for this type of pizza), and any other ingredients you like. Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes and enjoy a delicious homemade pizza!
To make the dough, combine 1 package of dry active yeast with 2 cups of warm water and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir to dissolve the ingredients and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes. Add in 3-4 cups of flour, 1/4 cup olive oil and a pinch of salt and knead until you have a smooth, elastic dough. Place this dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel and leave it in a warm place for an hour or more to allow the dough to rise. Once your dough has risen, you’re ready to assemble your pizza!

Which Pizza Toppings are best with White Sauce?

I would say just about any toppings are delicious over a white sauce pizza, but our favorites include:

  • Cheese: shredded mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, parmesan
  • Meats: chicken, crispy bacon, ham, pancetta, pepperoni
  • Vegetables: artichoke, tomatoes, jalapenos, spinach, roasted garlic, banana

Preheat oven and prepare your work space for pizza-making.

Before you begin assembling your pizza, it’s important to make sure that your oven is preheated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, you will want to make sure that you have plenty of space on the countertop and workspace for rolling out the dough and adding ingredients. Grease a baking tray with butter or oil and make sure it is positioned close by the work area for easy transfer once the pizza is ready.
Once your oven is pre-heated and you have space to make your pizza, it’s time to begin! Begin by making the white sauce. In a pot (on medium heat) mix together ¼ cup of butter, ½ cup of all-purpose flour and whisk until it forms a paste. Then add 1½ cups of milk and reduce the heat before stirring in ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Whisk ingredients continuously for around 5 minutes then remove from heat. The white sauce should be smooth without any lumps.

prepare the pizza dough. In a large bowl combine 1 teaspoon yeast, 1¾ cup warm water and whisk until the yeast is dissolved. Then, add 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil and 2½ cups of all-purpose flour to the yogurt mixture. Using a spatula, mix wet ingredients together and then add another 1 cup of flour. Turn out dough onto a floured surface and knead until it is soft and elastic before forming a ball shape. Place dough back into the bowl and cover with plastic wrap or damp kitchen towel for 30 minutes. Once finished rising, you are now ready to assemble your pizza! Transfer dough to parchment paper dusted with cornmeal before stretching out into desired shape by hand before adding white sauce, your favorite toppings, fresh herbs & cheese. Lastly bake at 400°F/200°C for 20 minutes for an irresistible homemade pizza with white sauce!

Prepare toppings for pizza and set aside.

The toppings for a white sauce pizza are just as important as any other. Before you start preparing the pizza dough, take the time to prepare your favorite toppings and set them aside for later. Whether it’s grilled vegetables, pepperoni, mushrooms, or cheeses–all of these items can be prepped at this time. Once your dough is prepared, you will be able to add your topping and enjoy!
Depending on what type of pizza you want to make, your individual toppings are important. If you plan to use grated cheese as a topping, then be sure to choose extra sharp varieties and store in a cool place. If you like mushrooms, be sure to clean any dirt or debris off with a wet paper towel as it can give the pizza an odd texture. For vegetables, wash them and peel or slice them according to your desired size for the topping. Grill vegetables if available for added flavor. Regardless of what toppings you choose, prepping them beforehand help keep your cooking time quick and efficient when making pizza with white sauce.
Set the toppings aside in separate bowls when finished. This will help you keep track of which topping goes on top of which pizza and prevents any surprises along the way. Depending on your chosen method for cooking, heat up the oven or gas stove to about 400-450 degrees Fahrenheit if an oven tray is used, or 500-550 Fahrenheit if a pizza stone is used in order to create that “wood fire” taste. Make sure to prep the ingredients and measure out the sauce while the oven is preheating so you can quickly assemble your masterpiece once it has reached its desired temperature and place it into the oven.

Make the white sauce, adding desired herbs and spices as desired.

To begin, melt butter over a medium heat before adding the flour. Whisk your butter and flour together to begin forming the roux. Let it cook until it starts to become a light golden brown color. At this stage, you can add your desired herbs or spices—think oregano, garlic powder, or red pepper flakes—and let it continue cooking for a few more minutes. As your roux begins to brown, start to slowly whisk in milk as you keep stirring on low heat. Continue stirring constantly to avoid lumps until the sauce is thickened and creamy!
Once the sauce is thickened, reduce the heat to low and add in your cheese of choice. A classic white pizza would use a mozzarella or provolone, but you can use any kind of cheese that you’d prefer. Keep stirring until the cheese melts and combines with your white sauce. Finally, season your white sauce with salt and pepper to taste and let it simmer for 5 minutes before using on your pizza! This creamy and delicious sauce is perfect for homemade pizzas, topping vegetable bakes, adding to mac and cheese recipes, or even pouring over pasta.

Assemble the pizza by spreading the white sauce on top of the prepared dough, topping with desired ingredients, and baking in preheated oven according to recipe directions.
Once your white sauce is ready, it’s time to assemble your pizza. Start by preparing the pizza dough according to your favorite recipe or using pre-made refrigerated dough that’s available at most grocery stores. Next, spread the white sauce over the prepared dough, followed by desired toppings like cooked sausage, pepperoni, or vegetables. Finally, transfer the pizza onto a lightly greased baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven according to directions on your recipe or dough packaging. Once golden brown and bubbly on top, it’s ready to serve!
With its creamy, flavourful sauce and bubbly, golden top, this pizza with white sauce is sure to be a hit. It’s a delicious twist on classic tomato-based pizzas and makes for a fun and creative way to enjoy Italian-inspired dishes at home.
